When to Keep Your Kids Home from School: A Quick Guide for Parents
As the school year is in full swing, it's important to know when it's best to keep your child home for their well-being and the health of others. At Star of the Sea Elementary, we strive to maintain a healthy learning environment and rely on families to help us reduce the spread of illness.
Following Fraser Health guidelines, here are some key signs that indicate when your child should stay home:
1. Fever
A fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher means your child should stay home until they've been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
2. Coughing or Breathing Problems
Persistent coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath may signal a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19 or the flu. Keep your child home and monitor symptoms.
3. Vomiting or Diarrhea
If your child has vomited or has diarrhea, keep them home until they've been symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
4. Sore Throat
A sore throat, especially with a fever or swollen glands, may mean strep throat. After starting antibiotics, wait 24 hours before returning your child to school.
5. Rashes
A healthcare provider should check unexplained rashes, as some can be contagious.
6. Lethargy or Fatigue
If your child is unusually tired or weak, they might need extra rest at home to recover fully.
