Grade Three Music Summary of Learning

Here is what Grade Three students will be learning in Music this year:

In term 1, students explore elements of rhythmic notation, melody, pitch differentiation,

staff/treble clef reading and tempo. Students are introduced to mallet instruments

(xylophone/metallophone/glockenspiel)and learn basic techniques on these

instruments. Through the pentatonic scale/melodies students access a foundational tool

for composition and improvisation in both classical and popular settings. Playalongs and

interactive notation-reading activities provide an immersive experience and allow basic

elements of musicianship to be absorbed naturally.

In term 2, students participate in the school Christmas concert by singing and learning

choreography as a class ensemble. They apply what they have learned over several

performances, building confidence and stage presence. Additionally, students will

continue to develop their musical skills by revisiting mallet instrument activities from

term 1, exploring these with increased sophistication. This will involve more complex

rhythms and melodies in two parts, improving their sense of timing and teamwork as

well as providing a platform for creativity and self-expression.

In term 3, students continue reading basic notation on the treble clef staff and develop

their abilities to read and perform rhythms, patterns, various tempi and melodies in two

parts on mallet instruments (xylophone/metallophone/glockenspiel). Boomwhacker

melodies and playalongs explore music in a polyphonic/multi-voice setting, using

classical, popular and pentatonic tunes as a basis.
