Math Facts

The students are practicing Math Facts on a daily basis either individually with cards, or partnered playing a game. Most of the students are practicing their times tables in class as we have for the past 2 weeks.

At home, please encourage your child to be practicing his or her Math Facts. Some students are still not fluent with addition facts so they should be practicing the at home. Subtraction facts are also a good alternative. 5 minutes a night of focused practice should be sufficient. The game, Hit the Button, is very useful for learning times tables as it focuses on one number at a time.

When learning a new number in x-tables using cards, the students should be having their times table chart (found in their planner pocket) in front of them so they are not spending time calculating answers and making possible mistakes. If they are practicing a number for speed, then the chart is not necessary. The students should be focusing on one set of numbers till they are mastered before moving on to the next number.

For the student who already know all their times tables, they need only practice a couple nights a week to maintain their fluency.
