Ash Wednesday and Lent Reminders

Families of Star of the Sea School,

It is really too bad we are missing out on celebrating Mardi Gras as a school community today. I expect that next year we will have a pancake breakfast and really live it up!

Tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. We will celebrate with Mass online together and we will have the distribution of ashes. Ashes will be distributed to students by staff members outdoors and wearing masks. Rather than making the sign of the Cross on the forehead as is customary, the ashes will be sprinkled on top of each person’s head. This is the method being used around the world this year to reduce touching and proximity due to COVID 19. See below for the religious symbolism and significance of Ash Wednesday

Students will also be bringing home Mite Boxes tomorrow. These boxes are to be used to collect money to support our seminarians. More importantly, the act of making a sacrifice (almsgiving) is an important part of Lent. While of course we welcome contributions from anyone, please encourage your child to contribute from their own money. It is the act of giving and sacrifice, more than the amount of money collected, that is important. Please help your child keep track of their Mite Box and have it ready to return after Easter.

May God Bless us and Grant us a Holy Lenten Season,

Mr. Jason Borkowski

Principal
